The Golden Mask of King Tutankhamen

  • The golden mask of king “Tutankhamun” is considered a masterpiece because it is made out of pure gold adorned precious stones.
  • It was found upon the head of the mummy of King Tutankhamun.
  • The mask is made out of pure gold with some precious and semi-precious stones. Its weight is for about 11 kg of pure solid gold.
  • The mask represents the facial features of kingTutankhamen while wearing the nms The strips of the nms headdress are made out of blue glass.
  • The eye brows and the eye lids are of blue glass.The white of the eye is made out of calcite and the black of the eye is made out of obsidian.
  • Looking to the forehead, there is a cobra and a vulture. They symbolize goddesses WADt and Nxbt of Lower and Upper Egypt. They are signs of protection. The vulture is made out of gold while its mouth is made out of lapis lazuli.The body of the cobra is also made out of gold and it is inlaid with laps lazuli, turquoise and cornelian.
  • The face of the king reflects the features of strength and youth. He is having false curved beard.The ears of the king are pierced. He is having wrinkles on the neck.
  • The king is wearing a large collar around his neck. The edges of the collar end with form of falcon head so that the king would be under the protection of Horus.
  • The back of the mask have hieroglyphs texts from chapter (151 B) from the Book of Coming Forth by the Day. In this chapter, each part of the mask was identified with sacred gods and things. For example the right eye of the mask was said to be the day bark of the sun god Re, the forehead was of god Anubis and the hair was identified with god Re. The identification of the mask with gods was to secure the king and provide him with protection.
